so im a 16 year old boy and like the rest of my friends im in to the pc gaming malarkey. i wanted a laptop for portability and i wanted all the new gear (i7 etc) i narrowed down all the laptops and finally chose this one. got it on offer for £600 which is still a lot of cash and it took me 3 years of saving but i will never look back. intel i7 just throws the performance at you and the graphics card performs well even on high spec games. small features like the back-lit keyboard make it even better and i love windows 8 too! people have mentioned screen res to be a problem but i havent noticed any problems yet and i think its very crisp. if i was to find one drawback it would be the gloss screen which is a pain outside but apart from that this is a great laptop. it out performs all my friends desktops and i paid less than them so its a win win. finally, the best thing of all - its a laptop so i can play games wherever i like im not just anchored to one certain place like a desktop. so yeah. thats about it really its good for everything and it multitasks like my mum! dont look back people... this is the laptop for you.

At the time of writing, if you want a core i7-based Windows 8 touchscreen laptop, there isn't much choice out there. At £800, this Lenovo represents terrific value for money.

Ideally I'd have preferred an SSD but, in hindsight, the 1TB hard-drive is fast enough to not be a noticeable drag on performance. And I was concerned about the relatively low screen resolution, but games and films look crisp, with good levels of contrast and colour. The touchscreen works perfectly and is very easy to get used to.

On my previous laptop I was still using XP, having purposely avoided the car crashes that are Vista and Windows 7. Windows 8 takes some getting used to but, coupled with a touchscreen, has an efficient, modern feel. You soon get used to moving apps about into sidebars, or closing them, with simple swipes on the screen.

The build quality is very good for the price. It's advertised as chocolate brown, but it's so dark it's almost black. I use it mostly actually on my lap, and it doesn't get hot at all. I'm sure the fans must come on occasionally but they are completely silent.

Negatives? Well, nothing is perfect, but I feel it's mean to pick gripes with such a strong all round package. If I had to pick something it's that when I switch on (or wake) the laptop, the dvd tray opens. And the touchpad (which you still need to use from time to time) can be a little jumpy sometimes.

I'd really recommend this laptop.

This is a lovely piece of kit. I have only had it three days but it is far better than I could have imagined at the very reasonable price point I found it at. (£799, it has since gone up) I must however point out the last laptop I bought was in 2001, and I do not own a tablet but do have an I phone. I was warned that I would find windows 8 a problem, well so far I dont, it's brilliant and far more intuitive than usually given credit for, and this is from someone already of pensionable age. The touch screen is an absolute joy, not every gesture works but most do and the windows 8 tips app helps with the rest. The keyboard is accurate and has a good feel, it is solid and could not be described as light weight but is is slim and well designed. I am a dinosaur so am pleased it has a disc drive unlike my wife's MAC. I will let you know if I run into problems but at present I would strongly recommend this laptop.

This machine is about as good as it gets for a windows-based operating system at this price level. The i7 processor is remarkably fast. I use my machine primarily for business purposes, including elaborate spread sheets and large numbers of photographs. My previous workhorse was a Dell with Windows XP, which I loved. I also have a 13" machine for travelling, which has Windows 7. Couldn't get on with this at all. Now, with the Lenovo Z500, I have jumped to Windows 8 with a touch screen, and I absolutely love it. The touchscreen gets me to where I want to be much more quickly and more easily than with a mouse. The mouse is then used for the positioning of the cursor.
One reviewer has complained of the poor screen resolution - in fact, the viewing is excellent for the quoted resolution. Admittedly, it doesn't compare with the Mac's Retina screen, but it is more than good enough for all normal tasks.
The machine is relatively light in weight, and is easily portable. It has a nice feel to it and, whilst the design doesn't have the flair of a Mac, nevertheless it is pretty svelte. One of the main reasons that I purchased the Lenovo, though, is the keyboard. This is one of the best that I have come across, with easy typing. Overall, then, a first class machine which I can thoroughly recommend.

The main point is that it has the i5 Processor which is one of the fast est (under the i7's) at 2.50 mhz + massive memory hard disc + 6gb ram at only a few pounds over £400.
The rest of it seems to be v good quality-- v sharp screen --- good strong hinges on the lid/screen----lots of soft touch buttons.
Thus -- an excellent upgrade from our ageing desktop --- which has effectively replaced

Bought this after much research and comparison. Excellent product all round. Slight niggle is with the highly sensitive touchpad but you get used to that quite easily (with the odd swear word). Excellent value for the money as this has the i5 3rd gen processor , 6Gb Ram and most other laptops of this spec rating were very much more expensive. The whole unit works well together for most jobs. Haven't tried film cutting but then again probaly never will.

Very pleased with this laptop.
After reading countless reviews, I was thinking of a Samsung. It was a friend and a relative who told me about how happy they were with the Acer so I bought one.
Yes, the laptop is a little heavy but it has a nice spaced out keyboard. It is fast and has good memory. Loads of apps came with it, most of which I have deleted (easy enough). Reasonable instructions to get going.
Transfers from old PCs very easy, just follow instructions. The battery does it's job well and I notice also that the laptop doesn't get unduly hot like some of the others. One other thing, it is very quiet, doesn't sound like a breeze going through the room.
Overall, the price and features make this a good buy. Certainly the plus's far out way any minus's. Sharp picture, like so many others, the sun gets in the way sometimes!!!
Would certainly recommend it.

I received this laptop as a Christmas present, and has had no faults ever since. It does come loaded with freeware etc. which takes all of half an hour to remove whilst not focusing on removing it. I personally think Windows 8 is awful: it's not helpful at all, it means that you have to press start, then search for the item by having to find the search button etc. and it's too much hassle. This however is solved by installing StartIsBack, which returns the old button from Windows 7. Windows 8 is also incompatible with quite a few programs too, which is another downside. However, Acer have produced a brilliant machine, which is very fast, able to run many programs with no problems, and has a a lot of space. If this laptop had a better graphics card (which don't get me wrong, is able to play quite a few games with little problem), it would be the best laptop within this price range in my opinion, which it is one of already. Overall, this laptop is definitely worth the money, with what I expected and more. Windows 8 could be improved majorly, but that isn't too much of a problem if you ignore it.

In short:
Pros-
Very fast
Able to run lots of programs at once
Lots of space
Able to play a lot of games with no problem despite having integrated graphics
Brilliant value for money

Cons-
It has Windows 8, which is un-downgradable
Comes installed with pre-loaded software

very nice peice of kit, fast enought for the wife, find it nice to type with due to the spaces between the keys, vivid colours and a nice display.

couldnt justify knocking a star off for windows 8 as the laptop stil performs well with it, just windows 8 is a bit rubbish, get a copy of windows 7 thrown in and prob be perfect

This review is from : Apple 13-inch MacBook Pro (Intel Dual Core i7 2.9GHz, 8GB RAM, 750GB HDD, HD Graphics 4000, OS X Lion) (Personal Computers)

I've had a Dell laptop for the past four years and recently upgraded to this exact MacBook - best thing I've ever done! I'm a student and have never enjoyed studying and researching as much as I have since beginning to do so on this MacBook - it's perfect for the student, the professional and anyone who is wanting to use it for general entertainment purposes. Very on-trend too and looks quite the business!

I do a lot of writing, photo-editing, video-editing, listening to music, watching DVDs and surfing the net and with an amazing battery life and huge storage space, huge RAM, clear screen etc, it's absolutely perfect and I'm sure will last me for a few years with as little problems as possible.

It's still very portable at 13-inch, so don't just buy a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro Retina on the whim - this specific MacBook, whilst the others are still amazing, has so much more in terms of what I've described above. When I bought it over the phone from Apple, the man on the phone said that it was the 'MacBook that has everything'! And it really does.

I'd heard so many great things from other Mac users and after having an iPhone for the past year or so and enjoying my experience with that, I really can say that I've made a very sensible purchase.

If you're a student at university in the UK (or indeed the US) I would suggest that you phone the apple store themselves like I did to get your discount (took about £180 off my MacBook in total, though I went through a lot of bother with that (quite a wait for a few days while they check your student status before they dispatch) but it was still worth it. For those who can't get the discount, I've had a very pleasant experience with buying many a thing from Amazon in the past and so I would recommend that you buy your MacBook from them and nowhere else online, especially this particular laptop here. It really is quite something.

If you're new to MacBooks then I recommend 'MacBook for Dummies' which they also sell on this website and make sure that you get the most up-to-date version (2012) as that fits this 2012 MacBook with OS X Lion and the features that come with that and this Mac perfectly. It's easy to read and full of so many tips!MacBook For Dummies (For Dummies (Computers))

Well, what can I say, I am an Apple fan, I have an iMac, an iPhone 4S and now I've upgraded my white Macbook to a Macbook Pro. It's so good I no longer use the iMac, I've left that for the rest of the family to use and now all the programs and data I use is sync'd on the laptop and phone.

For ease of use, speed and reliability (they just don't slow down like PCs, the day I switched to Mac was the day the vein in my temple stopped throbbing from PC issues), separation from Microsoft (don't like them at all), the beautiful way Mac products interract with one another, the way you don't need to load in a CD to be able to connect to another piece of hardware, the user interface, and so much more I don't think I will ever go back to PC. And this laptop will last me well into my 50s and do everything I need.

I could gush a lot more but if you're a fan like me you already know why I like them. And if you're not a fan, well I wish you well, you're probably not reading this anyway.

just what you would expect from apple - an excellent laptop in all respects. The 13 inch screen is fine however my current flat screens make it difficult to connect the laptop to a larger screen if desired for longer term use during the day.

I am not a "tekkie", and don't really understand much of what is written in many of the reviews here when people talk about specifications and performance etc. What I will say is that I use a computer for photographs and music and chilling with the t'interweb... like a great many of us do.

I have used a Windows PC / Laptop for years, and have just become so utterly frustrated with the constant slowing / crashing / updates and Lord knows what else that comes along with any Windows product. Having had an iPhone for the last 3 years, I decided it was time to take the plunge and opt for a MacBook.

All I can say is "Why the hell did I wait so long?"... yes, it takes some getting used to with the differing operating system and controls, but once you do, it's so user friendly. Individual keys, stopping typo's and silly mistakes and a back lit keyboard making things easier to see. The screen may be a little smaller, but it is thinner and the resolution is just amazing - and that's without the Retina display variant!

It FEELS like a quality product, as well as looking the part... it's ridiculously quiet, blisteringly fast..... and just oozes quality!

If you are thinking of buying one, don't think any longer, just do it.... you will definitely not regret it!

Powerful, portable and visually stunning - this is the best MacBook Pro yet., 3 July 2012
By L. Hubbard
This review is from : Apple 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display (Intel Quad Core i7 2.3GHz, 8GB RAM, 256GB Flash Memory, HD Graphics 4000, 1GB GeForce GT 650M, OS X Lion) (Personal Computers)

The Macbook Pro with Retina Display is the latest in the MacBook pro range, and is without doubt the best looking and performing laptops on the market today. Regarding the tech itself, the Intel Quad Core i7 is the latest offering by Intel and the range of Sandy Bridge processors have been replaced by the new Ivy Bridge chips and this version ships with 8GB of RAM. The flash memory hard drive is only 256GB on this model and this seems like a bit of a drop compared to the size of traditional hard drives which can easily manage up 500GB-1TB in laptops these days. However, Apple have made speed and power a hallmark of this upgrade, and what you lose in hard drive space you do make up for in performance. If you need extra hard drive space, you can upgrade to over 700GB of flash storage (but this has to be done at the time of purchase and through Apple directly). Alternatively, the non-retina MacBook Pros have large storage space at a less costly price.

Of course the talking point has to be regarding the display itself. It has 5.1 million pixels, which is about 3 million more than an HDTV. To say that the screen is stunning is an understatement. It really has to be seen to be believed. To date, the Apple apps that ship with the laptop are all rendered perfectly for the resolution, but at the time of writing, the majority of third party apps are not correctly configured for the display, making them look a little fuzzy. Some of questioned this as being a clever ploy to increase the number of users of Safari, Apple's internet browser (which makes web pages look stunning). Google Chrome and Firefox both look slightly more fuzzy, although I doubt it will take long for them to update their browsers. Until then, Safari is the best bet for browsing the web.

The three things that caught my attention things are the loss of the DVD drive, that of an ethernet port (although you can buy a separate adapter should you require this) and the fact that it is almost impossible to upgrade. I have to confess none of these things bothered me greatly - I rarely use the CD/DVD drive and usually connect wirelessly to networks so these things were not major sticking points for me. The fact that the hard drive and RAM cannot be easily upgraded after the purchase means that whatever spec you go for, that will likely be it for the life of the machine. If you think you will need more hard drive space or RAM, now is the time to decide. This is quite a cunning plan by Apple, because it forces you to pay more at the start and reduces the amount third parties can make in selling peripheral parts. Again, this didn't bother me at all, but for those of you who like to upgrade your machines, this will be challenging to do.

The battery life lasts between 7-9 hours (depending on wifi usage) and given the power of the machine, this is a pretty amazing battery life. Weighing at just over 2 kilos, this is the epitome of power and portability. The design is as slick as you would expect - the main body of the machine is exceptionally thin, and this is surely due to the loss of the DVD drive. There are two thunderbolt slots and two USB 3 slots for exceptionally fast transfer speeds (although the speed you get is dependent on the capabilities of the USB storage device itself). The laptop itself is very quiet and makes almost no noise at all. Like the MacBook Pro, it does have a tendency to get quite hot when using a lot of processing power, but for streaming stuff in HD, the laptop is relatively cool.

I have read some online comments about an issue of "ghosting", whereby images appear to "burn" on to the screen. I have not noticed this, and suspect that it was due to a faulty batch (but thought it should be mentioned for the sake of balance). One final thing of note, the laptop is currently shipping with Lion as the OS, but in the future it will come with Mountain Lion (the latest version).

***UPDATE 27/7/12*** I installed Mountain Lion earlier which was completely painless as you would hope. The process was rather quick as well - it took about 15 minutes to complete the installation and I was pretty impressed. I won't go into detail on all the updated features of ML. It is essentially a revamped version of Lion (which I always thought was a tad clunky) and makes the Retina Display run even smoother than before. One of the best new features in my opinion is the addition of AirPlay, although will only be relevant for those of you who have an Apple TV. Essentially, you can now mirror your laptop display to any TV with an New Apple TV (Latest Model - Launched Mar 2012) box connected. This is particularly good for streaming videos, and saves the need to get cables out to physically connect the laptop to the TV. One of the major gripes that has not been fixed from Lion is the issue of full screen apps and a secondary monitor. Essentially, if a program is in "full screen" mode on the laptop screen, the secondary monitor still has that annoying "grey cloth" display. There might well be other pros and cons to ML but those are the two things that were most obvious to me. There many good things about ML, and given that it is cheap to upgrade I would recommend doing this. There are few "bad" things about ML and those that are seem to just be carried over from Lion.

Overall, this is without doubt the best Macbook Pro Apple have released. The combination of the solid state hard drive and the 8gb of RAM on this model make it blisteringly quick. I clocked it as a 15 second boot up and applications load faster than ever before. The downside is the price - you do pay a premium for the "retina display". That said, I would personally say that once you have worked with resolutions like this, it makes all other laptop screens look sub-par. If you can afford to get the "retina display" model, I would have no hesitations in saying it is the best display ever created for a laptop. Performance, style (and a great battery life) this MacBook has it all. It comes at a price, and not all Apps are ready to be viewed in such a high resolution. This will undoubtedly not take long however. The lack of the ability to upgrade will be a gripe for others. However, all I would say in response is when the experience is as slick and pleasurable as this, it makes you wonder how you ever managed with anything less.

Plenty of usually stellar reviews are available for this machine so I'm not going to repeat what you can read elsewhere. I'll just address the points that were important to me when I decided to get this machine.

I only bought it because my faithful old companion, a 7 year old Powerbook G4, was about to pop its clogs. I felt kind of forced into buying a computer and as a result, was not too excited. I was also worried about buying a first generation machine.

I'd like to add that I'm no Apple fanboy, but I'm just practical. I used to build my own PCs and when I got my first Mac, I couldn't believe how much more simple, yet equally powerful if you know how to use it, the machine was. I love Apple for what they can do but have found the brand a bit arrogant lately. That's for the context.

1) RETINA

I went to the Apple Store and looked at the machine, thinking the Retina was a gimmick, and on quick comparison in the store, these impressions were confirmed. I ordered the machine anyway since I needed a 15" screen and I have to say that looking at it now, the screen is just STUNNING. Even though less densely packed with pixels than an iPad for example, it looks even better to me. Closest comparison I can come up with is print on a Kindle DS. It's super precise. Apple has redefined the laptop screen and the world is suddenly split between a before and after.

The well-known downside is that most developpers have been taken by surprise. Chrome was quick to update their browser but others are waaay behind. Even with an updated browser, some website still display pre-Retina icons (Amazon included at the time of writing) and it shows. Overall, it's not a big problem and it will quickly show, depending on how quickly they can react, who's up to the new standards set by Apple.

2) OS

The Retina came with Lion and a free upgrade to Mountain Lion. Thank God as Lion seemed quite clunky, an unfinished version of Mountain Lion really. Download of ML took about 7h with an average connection, installation 20 min. The Retina runs faster and more smoothly on ML, it's very impressive. Downside (another known problem): battery life has taken a serious hit and I'm sure I've lost about 1h. Apple is supposed to be working on a patch.

3) NO MATTE SCREEN

It still puzzles me why Apple doesn't offer a matte version of the same computer. The Retina is less plagued with reflections than the previous Macbook Pro, which was to me unusable (I spend 6h a day on my computer). Despite Apple's claims, it still feels bright, i.e a bit fatiguing. Pro users of matte screens will understand exactly what I mean. A white background will burn itself into your retina (no pun intended). I'm obviously exaggerating a bit but some long term users it could be a problem. A solution is to turn down the brightness as much as possible. To be honest the bright screen does make it much more usable outside than my previous Powerbook, so it's just a question of choice. Initially I wanted to remove half a star for this lack of matte screen but this computer is just too good.

4) PRICE

Everybody claims it's super expensive but honestly, I paid the equivalent amount 7 years ago for my G4, and it wasn't nearly as nicely put together as this one. Looking at the competition on the Windows side of things is just laughable (unfortunately as Apple could do with some competition). There is simply, as I write this, no equivalent machine on the market. And believe me, I looked as I would have jumped ship had I found an equivalent with a matte screen.

5) LACK OF DVD DRIVE AND ETHERNET PORT

Too frequently mentionned complaints. I'm personally very happy to have the Superdrive out. It was extremely fragile, prone to breaking and its removal has allowed the machine to be made dramatically thinner. If you still need one and don't want to fork out for a Superdrive check this one out:

[...]

It is much cheaper, if a bit less sexy, and will do the job.

Lack of ethernet port? Well once more, one can't have thin AND Ethernet. An adapter is available. Maybe giving it for free would have been nice as opposed to charging people £25 for it but hey...

SUMMARY

All in all the best laptop available on the market at the time of this review, and the best one ever made.

My first Apple computer and boy why didn't i make the change years ago.
This Macbook pro oozes quality ,the looks ,the build ,the screen and what a screen you have got to see it to believe it.
Everything about this laptop is first class, and in my opinion worth paying the premium price.
I found the transition between Windows 7 and this new OS (Mountain lion) to be quite straight forward there are differences but you soon adapt.

Best mac i've owned, 18 July 2012
By marcymarc "marcy_marc2008"
This review is from : Apple 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display (Intel Quad Core i7 2.3GHz, 8GB RAM, 256GB Flash Memory, HD Graphics 4000, 1GB GeForce GT 650M, OS X Lion) (Personal Computers)

i switched to apple computers about 7 years ago when i started studying a music technology course at college and i've never looked back since.

I still own a pc (one that i built myself) but in all honesty i hardly ever use it.

This macbook is the latest addition to the line of mac's i've owned previously (a 13inch white macbook, silver macbook pro, Imac) This one is to replace my older early 2007 macbook pro which i still own but has seen some action over the years.

First thing i noticed when switching on the machine was the sheer speed of boot ups and application opening. I can boot up this machine and open every application on it in the time it takes my older one to reach the login screen. Performance is brilliant for my music applications too (logic, pro tools etc)

And obviously the display is gorgeous.

worth the money and i have no doubts that this will last me another 5 years of solid use as my other macs have.

I needed to upgrade my old 15 PowerBook and had my eye on the new 15 MacBook Pro retina. the only issue was price. it's an expensive piece of kit.

I was surprised to find it on amazon at the price I paid (£1,500) with a £300 saving.

I was a little nervous once I had taken the plunge but it got delivered, and as advertised was a brand new uk model.

Very happy with it. only gripe is you cannot change anything including replacing the battery. AppleCare is just under £300 which I'm seriously considering now.

nevertheless can't fault it. it's def a cut above the rest. but then so is the price.

You'll be happy once you've got it.

This MacBook Pro with retina display is the best version yet and is top value for money. The display is excellent and the laptop itself is lightning quick.

When received the keyboard was US so I had to return it as I specifically wanted the UK version, check the product code before opening to make sure it ends b/a or it is not a UK version! I have given this 5 stars as the machine itself is superb, it was the merchant (Amazon fulfilment was superb) at fault not the computer.

This is my 3rd Mac, I had been waiting for something new and special from Apple before I upgraded my 2009 13" Macbook Pro. I didn't want an incremental upgrade so I waited for something a little bit special..and I'm glad I did.

Firstly I wanted something powerful but also weight or lack of it is also very important to me. The fact that it weighed less than the 13" was a real deal maker for me. I didn't lug my 13" around much but I certainly didn't want to feel constrained by any extra weight that a better/larger machine usually brings with it.

I needed faster interfaces than USB 2.0 and firewire 800, I often move large amounts of data around and so USB 3.0 and Thurderbolt are important (although I wish T/B devices and interfaces were cheaper). The retina screen is fantastic, not only in terms of resolution, although I always want more, but also the lack of major reflections in the screen.

The boot up and shutdown times are great due to the SSD although I had replaced the spinning disc in my 13" some months ago with an SSD so this wasn't night and day different. That said the read/write performance of the SSD in the retina was much better that my previous machine, mainly because that only had a SATA I bus.

This machine looks so lovely I hate to hide it in a case but without a good case (or two) I know that it's perfect finish is going to get dented or scratched easily and I'd hate that even more. I bought this LArobe Black Addict Unibody MacBook Pro 15.4 Inch - Black + Wasabi and also a hardshell case Kuzy - NEWEST Apple MacBook Pro 15.4" with Retina Display A1398 BLACK Rubberized Hard Case Cover 15-Inch (NEWEST VERSION) Release June 2012. The Mac with the hardshell case fits nicely inside the LArobe case.

A few niggles however, I find the lack of a battery level indicator that can be read when the machine is off or asleep a bit annoying. Also the fact that with Mountain Lion on this machine there is no way to see how much time is left on your battery without clicking on the battery icon, not sure why this is..a bug? Oh and don't get me started on the faff that was the free upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion. This took so long and so many emails back and forth that I almost paid for it. Shame on you Apple.

All in all I'm very impressed and have yet to really stretch this machine.

As an addendum I have started to stretch this machine as I've installed windows and I'm currently running photoshop CS6 on it and have manipulated images up to about 280 MB. With images at that sort of size it does lag a bit when adjusting filters in Photoshop.
