The keyboard of this Sony Vaio has large, easy to find and use characters and icons. In use it has a crisp, positive feel. This laptop is very light and so easy to handle that I can walk around with it balanced on one arm and actually use it, which is great for me as I'm one of those people who think better when they're prowling!
The 'touch screen' is very responsive, but it does take some getting used to - careful handling and patience is the key! Also, I would advise anyone with a touch screen to keep a supply of screen wipes handy!!!
I'm having a great time discovering just what this small, but power-packed piece of tech is capable of (and so far it's amazing!).
It is also very sleek and elegant looking - totally, totally me.....
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a beautiful machine in all senses of the word, it is light, user friendly and very sleek.
I feel this may be Sony's answer to the MacBook Pro as in design it is very similar and although my very trendy MacBook owner friends enviously and jokingly sniffed at "an inferior product" they definitely enjoyed using and testing this out. I didn't detect much/any difference in performance between the two machines.
This has the latest Windows 8 which personally I am loving although I have heard mixed reviews from others about their experience of it. Perhaps I am enjoying it because this machine is coupled with a very nice touch screen allowing the user to customize the start screen to suit their own needs with a simple touch and drag movement. So if you want Facebook, BBC news, Wikipaedia, Twitter as your major starting apps they are right there on the front screen for you to access immediately. It is all built around your needs and has a very user friendly interface.
This particular model contains the very fast Intel 7 processor which allows easy multitasking and means it is superfast. It also has 4GB of RAM and 32GB SSD. For those who want to know what all this means then a good analogy is imagining YOU are the processor sitting at a desk, lots of RAM means you can have all your paperwork in front of you to access and the memory allows a filing cabinet as well! All of which you can simultaneously access with ease in order to effectively process and work.
Included is a one month free trial of the latest Microsoft Office software, after which it can be kept on a subscription service. This includes Office, OneNote, Excel, PowerPoint etc. All documents can be stored in Cloud settings which means they can be accessed across several devices as and when needed, really important if your work requires preparation of documents that you don't wish to send via email. This machine IS portable due to its size but importantly you don't need to cart your expensive purchase across town to share what documents you have prepared as they can be accessed remotely.
An important inclusion for me is the design and build of this machine, I have an autistic son who can be quite heavy handed, and so laptops can have a rather shorter life in this house! THIS Ultrabook though has been designed with the clumsy and heavy handed in mind and is shockproof meaning you are less likely to lose your data via bumps, knocks and drops! Sony says this is because the hard drive heads are immediately parked before impact, needless to say I have not tested this out!
The touchpad is lovely and responsive, I quickly got used to using this despite never having used one before. Likewise the touch screen is a nice inclusion in this age of tablets and means it can be used in a similar way. One issue I have noticed is that occasionally the touch screen becomes unresponsive and the only way of making it responsive again is to reboot the machine. I don't know if this is an issue with just THIS machine or whether it is a problem across the board but it is a rare occurance. On use it felt no different from using an iPad touchscreen so is lovely and responsive.
The side of the machine has two USB points, an Ethernet point, a slot for a memory card and a HDMI point as well. All worked easily on testing with various devices such as an iPod, a modem and a Blu-Ray player. It also includes other connectivity technology such as Bluetooth and I connected my connected my phone seamlessly and easily. Likewise the wireless technology connected easily with minimum fuss, I just entered my Broadband password and was connected in no time.
The visual display is very good and I have watched films and viewed photographs with no issues. It's a nice high resolution screen with good colour and intensity.
Included is PlayMemories which allows photographs and videos to be shared across several Sony devices.
In reviewing this machine I also looked at a variety of other reviews for the predecessor to this machine. The last version while attracting good reviews made comments about a noisy fan for example. Sony appear to have taken this on board and the new version is quiet and unobtrusive, yes the fan does cut in from time to time but it is not loud and infinitely quieter than what can be experienced from some of the older laptops out there.
Included apps are Internet Explorer, Sony Vaio Care (there is even a button on the machine labelled "Assist" which takes you right to the help screen immediately), Ebay, Maps, Vaio Movie Creator, Sony Music (a subscription service similar to Spotify...with a free month to start), Sony Movie Store where you can buy or rent movies and TV programmes, various included games and a link to Xbox Live, McAfee Security software plus much much more. There are also links to the Windows 8 app store and the Intel App store both of which contain enough apps to keep most people happy and many are free.
My opinion is that this is a lovely machine for those who need the capabilities of this type of processor and memory.
