Laptops are Laptops. Overall I have no problems with this one. Appears solid built. The screen is great. Windows 8 appears fine. It seems fast (although I cannot compare it to any other computer running Windows 8) and the scrolling is very smooth.
One thing I did notice is that there was no recovery disc in the box. After a bit of searching this no longer seems to be the standard. You would need to create a recovery disc yourself in Windows.
I was a bit skeptical purchasing a Windows 8 preinstalled laptop due to the secure boot / UEFI stuff. I was considering grabbing a Windows 7 version. However I decided to give it a try, and so far so good.
As you can probably tell from the headline I am a GNU/Linux user. I rarely use Windows unless I have to. This time, I decided to duel-boot so I had a copy of Windows 8 just to keep up to date when work PCs upgrade. Again, with the secure boot stuff I was a little skeptical, but turned out fine in the end.
if you are new to GNU/Linux and are not familiar with duel-booting or generally installing an Operating System, the below is not for you.
For linux users out there, the best method I have found to get the 2 OS's to run is:-
In the BIOS (press F2 on boot / samsung logo)
* To run Windows, I need to be in 'Secure Boot' mode.
* To run GNU/Linux, I need to be in 'UEFI & Legacy' which will then load GRUB.
Although GRUB has an option of running Windows 8, it will just crash/error.
This above probably is not specific to this laptop, but all computers that have Windows 8 preinstalled.
It is a bit of a pain to have to go into the settings like this to toggle Secure Boot or through the Legacy, etc. However, there may be other tricks on the net to run both Windows 8 and GNU/Linux through GRUB. From my experience, you can (essentially) have both OS's.
The Linux Distribution I used was Debian Wheezy. So take this info as a guide only.

This Samsung laptop is superb - lovely wide screen which makes all the difference especially when watching the odd TV programme on Sky Go. The keyboard is easy to negotiate and, all in all, I think this was a very good buy and especially as it was a good £100 cheaper than anywhere else for the same model. Highly recommend.
