Customer Reviews: Apple MacBook Pro 17 inch Laptop (Quad-Core i7 2.4GHz, RAM 4GB, HDD, 750GB, HD Graphics, Radeon HD6770M SD)
I have been an IT guy since the 90's and always stayed away from the "dreaded Mac"! I finally took the plunge and decided to see what it was all about. Since some of my AutoCAD programs are Windows based only I decided to use Parallels VM to run Windows-Only applications. After the first week I decided I would never go back to a PC. The boot is extremely fast and so all all of the applications!

This laptop is wasting my time. No, not because it is slow or anything, it is just so beautiful that I can't go for more than five minuets without looking at the extremely beautiful and well made unibody enclosure. Iv'e had it for about a week and I haven't had a SINGLE problem or error (well apart from the time Team fortress 2 and portal crashed, but that was an issue with the applications). The sound on this laptop is the best I have ever heard on any laptop, and the superdrive is great for playing CD's and movies. I have managed so far to get about 3 hours of full brightness, 10 hours in the dark, and about an hour of solid gaming or other intensive use. It is very light and only 0.98 inches or about 2 cm thick. Now, when I was thinking about buying this item, I wondered wether it could run games, and the simple answer is yes, but let's get in to more detail. So far, I have tested 3 games, Portal, Team Fortress 2 and Minecraft. Let's start with Portal. It is a very fun puzzle game involving a gun with fires Portals. This game is a great way to test a GPU because the computer may have to render up to four separate worlds when looking through portals. The laptop copes with this extremely well, with minimal lag and is able to maintain a fluid frame rate even when running at a native resolution with all graphic options maxed. Now for Team Fortress 2, as it is a first-person shooter it requires a decent frame rate for you to be able to get out of the way of a garage of bullets heading your way, and send a lot back. The MacBook Pro delivers high frame rates in spades. Last up it's Minecraft, possibly the most intensive application I have on my MacBook to date. The reason being it has to randomly generate, load and render an infinite world with trees, animals and monsters. While not testing the GPU as much, it certainly tests the CPU and RAM, as due to the sheer amount of things happening at once. The MacBook Pro seems to deliver a steady frame rate of around 40 Fps to 60 Fps, depending on the amount of stuff on-screen. This for me is an amazing difference as before on my Samsung R730 it would average a measly 1 Frame a second. It was a nice slide show though. The MacBook Pro doesn't just excel at gaming, it's beautiful display displays High-definition images well. But aside from it's backlit keyboard and light sensor which means the display is only as bright as it needs to be, it's party piece has to be its rather large tempered glass multitouch trackpad. For instance, you touch anywhere on the trackpad and it registers a click. Touch with two fingers it's a secondary click, or "right" click. Move two fingers up and down to scroll up and down, left and right for left and right. Use 3 fingers to drag, move 4 fingers up to see everything you have running. Spread all4 fingers out to see the desktop, and theres the old time favourite, pinch to zoom. I would recommend this, so go buy one now and have a high quality computer that works for you, not the other way round. PS: It is extremely easy to set up, as reflected by the extremely thin users manual.

For years I'd suffered the poisoned thorns sticking in my flesh that was MS Windows. Every few blinking months a new upgrade needed. Every app cost £60-£100 in the first place -I hunted for cheapo half baked apps. Hesitations or long long hold ups all the time -what is it now ? Every Help file completely useless and only ever available online. Filenames and extensions were important. But I thought they're not -my thought process and my output is. Why am I interrupted by nonsense ?
So I moved to where computing isn't computing anymore -it's getting on with my life. It's fun. My friend is seamlessly integrated. Defaults are thought through. Example: tonight I hadn't got the right printer driver for my soggy old deskjet printer -no problem I just plugged in its USB then hit search for updates. Then hit print -it worked that well. In that amount of time it's taken me to tell you now I was printing -15seconds. Simples ?
Being with my friend makes sitting down fun again. Not just silly internet -anyone can do that. I shoot a lot of video for my clubs. iMovie is just one of the many free built in apps. It makes stitching together all types of video, stills, sound, voiceovers, graphics, titles and natty transitions a breeze. All in 1080HD. Sure when I Export it works the processors hard, sure the back panel gets very warm, but I can be doing something else it doesn't lock up the whole machine.
I was stupid I wanted to run a few of my dodgy old Windows apps. I got Parallels -they make huge boasts. And surprisingly Windows ran 5 times faster than in it's native environment. Really complex games ran perfectly. Wo.
This is the second Apple based friend I've had. OSX is based on Unix so I've never had any virus protection on any Apple product my family have ever owned. Have I ever had the slightest twinge. No, not anything other than the odd pop-up box built into the odd site. They can't cause problems so I don't worry. It's a pleasure to just get on with my life. This new way of swiping means the screen area is just 17" because it can be gestured to be many many screens. The finger pad isn't just a mouse pad it's many programmable useful functions -how does it know you've got four fingers on it ? Wo.
One tip: If you buy a Mac buy Apple TV it's brilliant and only £79. It's all singing and dancing and buffers all my homegrown HD movies for when my friends come round. Wo.
No, I don't work for, or have shares in, Apple. No, I don't like the Big Brother in big companies. But if you think Apple are the only ones who know a fair bit about you then wise up because at least they tell you. There's not a company on the planet who aren't using "data" to find a way to target you and me as much as they can. And if you think old Billy Boy in Redmond WA doesn't have info a mile long on you and your family then you must be in such bliss !
Certainly Amazon know plenty about me which is why this pop-up came and grabbed me and your reading the musings of someone happy as Larry knowing I can confidently do almost any text or media based thingy with my little friends help. I bought and I'll never need to look back. It was a no-brainer.
The Macbook Pro does everything and it does it well and fast. I need Windows XP and 7 for work, which I run using VMFusion. I throw heavy weight enterprise applications at it and whilst that's busy number crunching, I can do other things in OS X without any problems at all, although upgrading the RAM to 16 GB helped (I paid £120 for standard RAM from a well know website here, avoiding Apple's huge upgrade cost).
It's also quite expensive here which is why I got mine in the USA for £1400.
This is a wonderful computer that works very well. I had dealt with microsoft for far too long in my personal life (granted I have to use it at work). I just didn't want to spend the money - but you get what you pay for. This computer works great, has such a great display and the mouse gesture features are awesome. Resale value holds just like a subaru. But you won't want to part with it for a long time, I have had mine a year and the last thing I think of is that I need more speed. Highly recommended.

Apple MacBook Pro 17 inch Laptop (Quad-Core i7 2.4GHz, RAM 4GB, HDD, 750GB, HD Graphics, Radeon HD6770M SD) Fantastic machine, great screen, once you get used to the system it is so easy and so fast it almost thinks for you. There are so many things and options loaded that i am still finding things. There is no way that i would go back to the old system and it was so easy to transfer all the relevant information that i needed from the old system. Unbelievable i was working in the dark ages before and the big screen is great for films and videos, when you use a web-cam it is like they are in the room with you.

I bought this product not knowing what I would get but was very pleased when I turned the laptop on to find that it worked perfect and was even nicer and lighter and also a lot quicker than my old MacBook Pro17 inch laptop. The service from Sumerswhite was quick and easy and if I wanted anything else from them I would definetly order from them again. They delivered on the day that they said they would so all i can say it was quick and painless. So thanks everyone.
